We are deeply saddened to inform you of the passing of Reb Avrohom Schonberger, z”l—a pillar of the Viener community, and ba’al chessed to his core. He was 88, and had been weak in recent years.

The niftar was born in Budapest to his father, Reb Cheskel, who was a legend in his own right in those prewar days in Europe. He grew up, imbued with a burning passion to help his fellow Yid—an endeavor to which he would dedicate his entire life on this earth.

Following the war, he became an ardent talmid of Rav Michoel Ber Weissmandl, zt”l, and has remained a talmid for life, close to his children, and a generous supporter of Nitra institutions.

He also became close to the Viener-Hodhazer Ruv, and thus was his entry in the world of Vien. A confidante of the previous Ruv, he became his right hand in all matters of the kehillah. Over the years he would donate millions to Vien, dedicating several buildings in the memory of his perished family, and would serve as the longtime Rosh Hakohol.

Fellow mispalelim recall “the epitome of a gentleman, a ba’al chessed, and a ba’al tzeddokoh.” Famed musician Avrumi Berko sat next to, ybl”ch, Reb Avrohom for twenty years. “The nicest man,” he laments.

He was also active in Agudah, and in a number of Klal matters.

The loss to the Viener kehillah is tremendous, as a pillar of over forty decades departs this world—but his generosity lives on in the institutions that he established over his lifetime.

The levaya will take place at Shomrei Hadas Sunday morning at 11:00.
