BDE: Reb Moshe Fettman, z”l, Holocaust Survivor

We regret to inform you of the passing of Reb Moshe Fettman, z”l, a pillar of the Sigheter kehillah in Boro Park. He was 90 years of age, and a Holocaust survivor.

He was born in 1931, in Hajdúhadház (pronounced Huthaz), Hungary. His father was Rav Chaim Pesach Fettman, an ardent Kosonier Chossid, a great tzaddik, and a ga’on b’Torah. In Huthaz, Moshe learned Torah from the future Viener Rav (and his son in law learned by him on American shores, when he was already Viener Ruv. But to Reb Moshe he always remained Huthazer Ruv. Reb Chaim Pesach would later become a Rav in Tzafas, before moving to Boro Park himself. Soon, the family moved to Debrecen, where Rav Chaim Pesach taught Torah.

The family experienced incredible nissim in their escape from Debrecen, and were saved in the most miraculous way… involving a confusion with Eichmann, ym”sh, and bribes. The Fettmans then went to Tzfas for a few years.

Arriving in America, Moshe Fettman went to work as a jeweler on 47th Street. He married, Tbl”ch, the former Judy Hertz, the daughter of Reb Yitzchok Hertz. Mr. Hertz was an ardent Sigheter Chossid from before the war, and arriving here, he reconnected with the Beirach Moshe, becoming his gabbai in Boro Park, as Ruv of the Sigheter shtiebel.

Through this connection, Reb Moshe also became a pillar of the Sigheter kehillah for  more than half a century.

His entry into the construction business was accidental. The Fettman’s had purchased a lot, and built a home upon it. Then they sold it, and built a new one. Over his career—which spanned until his 80th year—he built dozens of homes in Boro park and elsewhere. His company was named Homes of Distinction.

He was a beloved father and zeidy who would do anything for his family, and always had a good word for everyone. His passing marks yet another loss of the precious She’eiris haplietah.

The levaya will take place Thursday morning at 11:00 at Shomrei Hadas.

Yehi Zichro Baruch.
