Believing Tesla Might Have Steered Consumers Wrong the NHTSA Is Investigating Steering Wheel Issues
by M.C. Millman
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began an investigation into Tesla after receiving two complaints about the steering wheel falling off the steering column while the car was being driven.
The investigation, which could affect 120,089 Tesla 2023 Model Y SUVs, opened on March 4.
The steering wheel fell off both times due to a missing bolt that secured the wheel to the steering column. Both incidents happened while the new SUVs still had low mileage. One case took place on January 29, five days after the purchase of the car, as the steering wheel, held initially due to friction, separated once force was exerted as the SUV was in motion.
