Breslov Chasidim thank the Ukrainian government for designating Rabbi Nachman's Tzion and the mass grave of Kedoshim as a national heritage site.
The Breslov community worldwide warmly welcomed the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to grant the status of a Cultural Heritage Site of National Significance to the Kever of Rabbeinu HaKodosh, Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, zt”l.
This decision highlights the profound historical and international significance of Rabbi Nachman’s resting place and underscores the Ukrainian government's firm commitment to protecting Jewish heritage in Ukraine. Even amid the brutal war with the Russian aggressor, Ukraine remains steadfast in its devotion to humanistic ideals and continues to act decisively to preserve its diverse multiethnic cultural legacy.
This measure is particularly timely, as the cemetery where Rabbi Nachman, zt”l, is buried has been under threat from illegal developers. In violation of both Ukrainian law and basic moral principles, these developers have turned the cemetery area into a massive construction site, aiming to build multi-story apartment buildings and hotels.
The newly granted status of Cultural Heritage Site of National Significance will ensure strict government oversight of the protection zone regulations surrounding the Kever. It will also restrict commercial and entrepreneurial activity near Rabbi Nachman’s grave. This sacred site—located beside mass graves of victims of the Haydamak massacre of 1768—is the most visited Jewish heritage site in Europe. It attracts thousands of pilgrims from around the world, even during wartime.
Once again, we have witnessed that through the initiative of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and with the support of the Head of the President’s Office Andriy Yermak, the Ukrainian government is taking decisive and meaningful action to preserve historical memory, restore significant cultural landmarks, and safeguard them not only for Ukraine’s Jewish community but for the entire Ukrainian nation and the global community. In their letters to the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio and Special Presidential Envoy Keith Kellogg, the leaders of Nachlas Daas Breslov Congregation noted the prominent role of President Zelensky and the Head of the President's Office, Yermak, in protecting Jewish heritage in Ukraine. May their continued efforts bring lasting benefit to Ukraine and its people.
