Brooklyn Marine Terminal Set for Major Transformation
By Y.M. Lowy
The $3.5 billion plan has now been approved to completely remake the Brooklyn Marine Terminal into a modern port and create a new neighborhood along the waterfront.
Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul said the project will turn the old, crumbling terminal into a 60-acre, electric maritime port. It will also bring 6,000 new homes, with more than 2,400 permanently affordable, along with 28 acres of parks and public space. Plans include new shops, community centers, and space for small businesses and light industry.
The redevelopment is expected to create 37,000 construction jobs and 2,000 permanent jobs, while generating $18 billion in economic activity.
“This plan will give us thousands of homes, jobs, and open space, while putting New York at the front of the green economy,” said Mayor Adams. “We’re turning our waterfront into a ‘Harbor of the Future.’”
“This bold, $3.5 billion vision will transform the Brooklyn Marine Terminal into a modern, all-electric maritime hub and a thriving new neighborhood,” Hochul said. “New York state is proud to stand with the city to make this once-in-a-generation investment in our waterfront, our economy, and our communities.”
