CAMERAS ARE ON: MTA Activates Speed Cameras In Work Zones At NYC Bridges And Tunnels

The MTA has activated speed cameras in active work zones at bridges and tunnels across New York City as part of an effort to slow drivers down and protect workers.

The cameras are being used at several major crossings, including the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge, Henry Hudson Bridge, Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge, Queens Midtown Tunnel, Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, Throgs Neck Bridge, and Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.  

Drivers who are caught traveling more than 10 miles per hour above the posted speed limit will receive a warning for a first offense. After that, fines will begin at $50, increase to $75 for a second violation within 18 months, and rise to $100 for additional violations.  

According to the MTA, each active work zone will be equipped with radar and camera technology. Signs will also be posted to notify drivers that automated speed enforcement is in use.

The violations are considered non-moving violations, and will not appear on a driver’s record.
