Car Thefts Continue to Skyrocket in NYC

Car thefts in New York City are up 50%, and continuing their upward trajectory, the NYPD reported.

In the last 28 days alone, 803 cars were stolen in the city, while last year during the same four-week period, 537 cars were stolen.

And the numbers keep rising. Just last week, compared to the same week in 2020, 64% more cars were stolen, when the NYPD reported 236 car thefts, compared with 144 car thefts, a year ago.

While car thefts are just one part of an overall increase in crime in New York City, the NYPD pointed out that New Yorkers can take more precautions to prevent car theft.

For instance, many thefts took place after drivers, who want to quickly jump out of their cars to run errands, left their keys in their cars, which were left running. Other stolen cars were found with owners’ key fobs left right in the cars.

While car thefts have increased in the last year, they have been surging for the past several years.  While the NYPD reported 5,422 grand larceny auto cases in 2019, that number soared to 9,038 in the city in 2020.
