Chaverim Volunteers Help at Least 70 Boro Park Residents Drain their Flooded Basements

Heavy rains poured down from the Boro Park skies through the night resulting in lots of excess water as the city's sewer system could not keep up with the relentless rain.

At 4:39 am Chaveirim received the first of many calls from local residents regarding basement floods.

Chaveirim volunteers quickly got to work and began to pump water out of basements with their special equipment in an effort to minimize the damages caused by floods.

Yitzy Krauss, one of the coordinators at Chaveirim explained that the city’s sewer system could not absorb all the rainwater from the sudden downpour that came after hours of rain, and with nowhere to go, much of the water seeped into people’s basements.

“When any bad weather is forecasted, keep valuables raised on wooden pallets or in plastic containers at least four inches above the ground, says Krauss.

“In addition, make sure to clean your outdoor sewer grates to prevent it from clogging up.”

By 10:00 AM, Chaveirim broke the record in the amount of calls received in such a short period of time. They devotedly responded to over 70 calls and are still counting.
