City Urges Caution as Ponds and Lakes Freeze Over
By Y.M. Lowy
With temperatures staying well below freezing, ponds and small lakes around the city are starting to look solid and glassy. It may seem harmless, even tempting, but officials are warning that the ice is not safe.
Even when water appears fully frozen, ice thickness can vary and weaken without warning. Stepping onto it can quickly turn dangerous and, in some cases, deadly.
City officials are urging residents to stay completely off frozen lakes, ponds, and rivers, and to keep a close eye on children near any icy water. The same caution used on slippery sidewalks should apply to park paths and open areas, where ice can be just as treacherous.
In case of emergencies, NYC Parks has placed ice ladders near some bodies of water to help with rescues, but they stress that prevention is key. If someone falls through ice, residents are reminded not to attempt a rescue themselves and to call 911 immediately with the exact location.
