Crime Continues to Soar, although NYPD Makes Headway on Reducing Shootings and Seizing Guns

Mayor Eric Adams was elected after promising to provide public safety, however, six months after he took office, overall crime is up nearly 40%, NBC Nightly News pointed out last night.

In June, overall crime soared more than 30% compared to June 2021, and NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said while repeat offenders are mostly to blame, “We are not going stop trying to take them in custody and making sure that they face consequences for those actions.

“We are arresting the same people over, and over, and over again,” the mayor said on Monday.

When asked, “Whose fault is that?” Adams blamed, “the criminal justice system, the [bail reform] laws that we have passed, the failure to prosecute those who are committing crimes and judges who are not using the power that they have.”

But Adams also blames the ideas of that arise from extremes of both the Left and the Right for crime rates that he says are high nationwide.

“You have the far-right, that [wants to] give everyone a gun, no matter what,” Adams said. “You have the far-left that says that everyone who uses a gun should not be held accountable. These two groups [do not reflect] the majority of Americans, and they have actually held our country and city hostage.

“These two groups don’t realize they’re co-conspirators to the public safety crisis that we’re facing in our city and country.”

In June, NYC sadly saw a rise in six of the seven major crimes, according to the department that reported that grand larceny spiked 41%, robbery rose 36.1% and burglary soared by 33.8%.

On the good news front: murders dropped a sizeable 31.6% last month in comparison to numbers the NYPD compiled in June 202

While a year ago the NYPD recorded 38 murders in the city, last month 26 murders were committed. Another hopeful indicator is that shooting incidents declined by 24.2% from year to year in June.

The NYPD is also making considerable headway in its fight against NYC’s soaring crime by statistics that show the department’s gun arrests stand at a 27-year high.

In addition, police officers have seized more than 3,700 guns so far this year.

While the NYPD recorded fewer hate crimes in June 2022 than in June of last year, a shocking 23 of the 59 hate crimes targeted Jews, an increase of 28% from June of 2021.

“We are encouraged by this downward trend in gun violence as summer gets underway, but we must remain focused on our critical public safety mission,” NYPD Commissioner Sewell said.
