Crime Decreases for Second Month in a Row in New York City

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced this morning, that for the second month in a row, the number of murders, shootings, and shooting victims are down in New York City.

Murders are down by 26%, shootings are down by 10%, and the number of shooting victims are down by 11%, reported the mayor, who emphasized increased gun arrests, identifying the small number of violent New Yorkers, and gang take-downs as the keys to turning the tide of crime in New York City.

The NYPD continues in it efforts to sweep guns off the streets, when in July, the department made 383 gun arrests, which is 133.5% more gun arrests than New York police officers made last July.

In 2021, the NYPD reported that the NYPD’s gun arrests are up by 44.5%

“I see incredible improvement in crime reduction,” said NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea.

“Together we can do this,” the mayor said. “The small number of people who commit violence will be brought to justice and give consequences.”

In May the mayor launched Safe City NYC to bring down crime in the city by strengthening the relationships between communities and police, providing meaningful alternatives, like sports, recreational activities, and jobs for young people, and by bringing back the courts system.

“We have to bring guns out of their hands, and giving them alternatives to violence,” City Council Member Vanessa Gibson said this morning. “We must continue to work together with clergy, advocates, police, and local leaders to continue to bring crime down. Every New Yorker has a fundamental right to feel safe.”
