DEP and DDC Celebrate New Green Infrastructure in Boro Park

By Idy Perl

This morning, officials from the Department of Design and Construction and the Department of Environmental Protection celebrated the construction for the new Green Infrastructure project at 12th Ave and 37th Street.

As previously reported here, the $34 million Green Infrastructure project will bring porous pavement to several Boro Park Streets, allowing rain to drain through it to a sand layer underneath the road.

At the event today officials held a demonstration by pouring water on the porous pavement and showed how it went through the pavement instead of traveling along the surface.

The installation of the pavement will be taking place in Boro Park for the next 14 months.

"Here we are in beautiful Boro park for the 34 million dollar capital project in your neighborhood," said Thomas Foley, commissioner of the NYC DDC, heading this new project, in a statement to BoroPark24.

"We are installing 7 miles of porous pavement. These are precast panels that we install along the curb line, so when the water drains off the roadway, it doesn't go into the local and sanitary sewers. Instead, it is absorbed through the concrete into the sand layers underneath." Thomas said.
