DSNY Responds to Senator Felder’s Concerns Over Shabbos Sanitation Violations

Last night, BoroPark24 published an article with a formal letter from Senator Simcha Felder to the New York City Chief of Enforcement at the Department of Sanitation in response to growing concerns from constituents regarding sanitation violation tickets issued to Shabbos observant residents.
Joshua Goodman, Deputy Commissioner, Public Affairs & Customer Experience at DSNY reached out to BoroPark24 with the following statement on this matter:
"The old 4pm set-out time was among the earliest in the country, and it meant that black bags of trash sat on our curbs more than half the day. Changing this old status quo is getting results, with the largest year over year drop in rat sightings since 2010, but sustained progress depends on compliance with the rules.
The Department has previously offered to change the collection day in this neighborhood from Saturday to another day of the week. While that offer was declined by community leaders, it remains on the table."
