Electoral College Votes Today: NY electors formally vote for President-elect Joe Biden

By Yehudit Garmaise

New York’s Electoral College delegates formally voted for President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris today, Monday, Dec. 14, the date that the U.S. Constitution chose for the electors of the Electoral College to official vote for the president of the United States.

Despite health concerns during the coronavirus pandemic, New York state election law required this year’s 29 electors to meet in person, while wearing masks and practicing social distancing in the New York State Capitol’s Assembly Chamber, a large building that can hold 1,045 people.

All of 29 New York state’s electors cast their votes for Biden and Harris.

Earlier this month, the state Board of Elections certified the 2020 vote, showing Biden defeated President Donald Trump by 2 million votes. Biden had 5,230,985 votes and Trump had 3,244,798 votes, according to New York state’s Board of Elections.

Biden also won the national popular vote by more than 7 million, with a record 81,283,495 votes to Trump’s 74,223,755.

On Nov. 3, Biden won the Electoral College with 306 electoral votes to Trump’s 232, but on Jan. 6, the U.S. Congress will formally count the electoral votes.
