Esther and David the Top Names of Babies Born in Brooklyn

Boro Park – David and Esther are the most popular names in Brooklyn for the year 2018, the city health department announced Monday.

In New York City overall, parents chose Emma for their girls and Liam for boys, the second year in a row these names topped  the list of most popular baby names. There were 114,296 babies born in the city last year. Birth certificate records show 501 Emmas and 779 Liams.

The health department releases the top baby names for each year at the end of the following year, culled from birth certificate records. They will have results for 2019 in a year from now.

Some Jewish names on the top ten list include Jacob at number four for boys, David at number six, Leah at seven and Sarah at number eight for girls. Daniel seemed to be becoming more popular, moving up one slot from number ten to nine while Alexander made its debut on the list at ten.
The city again recorded more boys born than girls. There were 55,854 new female citizens arriving in the world in 2018, compared to 58,442 males.

From 2017 to 2018, the number of babies born in New York City decreased 2.3 percent from 117,013 births to 114,296. This reflects a population flight as young parents seek places were they can afford housing.
Brooklyn was the second most populous borough, with 28,270 births. The hospital with the second largest number of births, Maimonides Medical Center, is located there. The largest, Long Island Jewish Hospital, is in Queens, the runner up to Brooklyn with 23,963 births.
The borough with the most births was Manhattan at 42,945 new babies. Rounding out the list is the Bronx with 13,452 and Staten Island with 5,666 mazel tovs.

As the decade draws tp a close, the top baby names for each of the 2010s were as follows: In 2010 and 2011, Isabella led among the girls and Jayden among boys. Isabella dropped off after that to make place for Sophia, while Jayden stayed on until 2014, when Ethan took its place.
Sophia stayed for two years until 2015 when it made way for Olivia, while Ethan was displaced in 2016 by Liam. Emma and Lia led for the following two years.
