Felder, NYPD Leaders Tour Ave. J & Bay Parkway to Tackle Racing, Gridlock, and Pedestrian Safety

Councilman Simcha Felder visited the intersection of Avenue J and Bay Parkway alongside multiple NYPD officials, responding to growing community concerns over safety, traffic, and quality of life in the busy corridor.
During the on-site walkthrough, residents’ complaints centered on reckless racing, dangerous driving, chronic gridlock, and pedestrian crossings that many say have become increasingly hazardous. Felder said what has been taking place at the intersection is “completely unacceptable,” stressing that the behavior endangers families and requires urgent attention.
Felder was joined by a senior group of law enforcement leaders, including NYPD Sergeant Wing Chan of Community Affairs at the 66th Precinct, Sergeant Sheraz Ashraf of the 70th Precinct, Deputy Inspector Kenneth Herrarte, Commanding Officer of the 66th Precinct, Captain Lawrence Wang, Executive Officer of the 66th Precinct, and Lieutenant Ralph Postiglione of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South. The officials discussed immediate enforcement steps and longer-term strategies to calm traffic and improve safety.
“Our community deserves streets they can walk, drive, and live on without fear,” Felder said, calling for a multi-agency approach that combines targeted NYPD enforcement with better street design. He noted that the NYPD has already committed to a coordinated response in the area.
Looking ahead, Felder said he plans to return to the intersection in the coming weeks with the Department of Transportation’s Brooklyn Borough Commissioner to explore roadway and crossing upgrades aimed at easing congestion and protecting pedestrians.
