Governor Hochul Announces $36.9M Fort Hamilton Parkway Bridge Upgrade to Improve Safety and Add Bike Lane
By Y.M. Lowy
A $36.9 million project is now underway to upgrade the bridge carrying Fort Hamilton Parkway over the Gowanus Expressway in Brooklyn. The construction will bring major structural upgrades, enhance safety, and add a protected bike lane connecting existing paths along Fort Hamilton Parkway and 7th Avenue.
The project includes replacing the bridge deck and steel supports. Lighting, sidewalks, and curb ramps will also be upgraded to meet ADA standards.
To make space for the new protected bike lane, travel lanes will be redone, but pedestrian access and the parking lane will remain. Drivers should anticipate lane closures and traffic shifts during the work, which is expected to finish by summer 2027.
