Governor Hochul Opposes Con Edison Rate Hikes

By Y.M. Lowy
Governor Kathy Hochul is against Con Edison’s plan to raise electric and gas bills for New Yorkers in 2026.
The utility wants to increase electric bills by 11.4% and gas bills by 13.3%, saying it’s needed to improve the power grid and invest in clean energy. But Hochul is calling for the state to reject these hikes and is investigating how much Con Edison’s top executives are being paid. She believes New Yorkers shouldn’t have to pay more while executives earn big salaries.
The New York State Public Service Commission will decide if the hikes go through. Many New Yorkers are concerned about the rising costs and whether the utility is asking too much.
