Hatzalah Voices Strong Opposition to Possible Takeover of Maimonides Hospital

Widespread concern spread through the community following reports that New York City may take control of Maimonides Medical Center. In response, Hatzalah released a joint statement from its coordinators across Boro Park, Flatbush, Crown Heights, and Mill Basin, voicing grave concern and firmly opposing the potential takeover.

In their letter, Hatzalah clarified that discussions between Maimonides and NYC Health & Hospitals are still ongoing, but emphasized that such a move would not serve the best interests of the local community. They stressed that their opposition is based on years of close cooperation with Maimonides, which has long served as the primary hospital for the area’s Jewish population.

Hatzalah described its partnership with Maimonides as one built on mutual respect and shared commitment to saving lives.

“For many years, we have had and continue to have an excellent working relationship with Maimonides Hospital, its administration, and its staff,” the coordinators wrote. “We believe this partnership has been essential to maintaining the high level of care our community depends on.”

While no decisions have yet been finalized, Hatzalah confirmed that hospital operations remain unchanged and that Maimonides continues to function as usual. However, the coordinators made clear that they have already voiced their opposition to both city officials and the hospital’s leadership, urging that the hospital remain independent and responsive to community needs.

The possible city takeover has raised serious concerns within the community, as Maimonides stands as a medical center that has long understood and respected the unique needs of the Boro Park community.
