Hugh L. Carey Tunnel Flood Door Tests Continue Tonight

By BoroPark24 Staff
The MTA is continuing its series of overnight flood door tests at the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel (formerly the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel), with the next scheduled closure taking place tonight, Monday, May 12.
The tests are part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to prepare for potential hurricanes or tropical storms. Each of the tunnel's massive flood doors, each weighing over 20 tons each, can only be tested when the tunnel is closed to traffic.
Tonight’s work will involve the closure of the Brooklyn-bound West Tube, beginning at 9:00 p.m. and continuing until 5:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. During this time, traffic will be maintained in both directions using the remaining open tube, with one lane available each way.
The first three rounds of testing, which included the Brooklyn East, Manhattan East, and Manhattan West tubes, were successfully conducted last week.
