It’s Mosquito Season in the City – NYC Health Department Issues Seasonal Warning

By Y.M. Lowy

From spring through early fall, mosquitoes are part of life in New York City. They show up when the weather gets warm and lay their eggs in any still or slow-moving water they can find.

In recent years, they’ve been sticking around longer. Warmer winters, earlier springs, and more rain give them more time to breed and spread. Most of the mosquitoes buzzing around don’t carry disease. But a few kinds found in the city can spread West Nile virus.

For most people, a mosquito bite just causes a bit of itching or swelling. Some may react more than others, but it doesn’t mean you’re sick. Wash the bite with soap and water, try not to scratch, and use an ice pack if it gets swollen or itchy. A baking soda paste or anti-itch cream can also help soothe the bite.

A bit of prevention can help you stay safe and more comfortable through the summer- consider using repellent sprays or mosquito patches if you tend to attract bites.
