June 1 Brings Deadline for NYC Trash Bin Requirement

By Y.M. Lowy

Since late 2024, owners of residential buildings with one to nine units have been required to place garbage in lidded containers instead of loose trash bags. That rule began being enforced in January 2025, and sanitation tickets have already been issued across the city.

The next major deadline arrives on June 1, 2026. From that date on, those containers must be the official NYC-branded trash bins. Any other bin, even one with a lid, will no longer meet the requirement.

The rule applies to single-family homes, townhouses, and small apartment buildings with up to nine units. Commercial businesses were already required to containerize trash last year, while larger residential buildings are being transitioned into a separate system using large on-street containers known as Empire Bins.

Sanitation enforcement is already active, with fines increasing for repeat violations. A first offense carries a $50 fine, a second $100, and a third or later violation can reach $200. At the moment, tickets are being issued for loose bags or oversized containers. Starting in June, fines can also be issued for using the wrong type of bin.

The city-approved bins cost roughly $44 to $54, depending on size, and are designed to work with newer sanitation trucks while limiting access for rats. The container system has already helped reduce rat activity and made streets cleaner. The bins are available through the city’s program and at select Home Depot locations.
