His mother was the daughter of Rabi Yehuda Matzliach, who was the rov of Modena. </p><p>In his youth, he learned under a number of great gedolim in Italy, with a number of mekubalim among them. He settled in the Italian city of Pisa, in the Tuscany region, where he began to teach Torah to talmidim. Eventually, he returned to Mantova, where he served as the rov of the kehillah. </p><p>He married in the year 1733, and the couple had a son. Tragically, their son passed away in childhood, and Rav Shimshon Chaim would be niftar childless. After the passing of the rov of Reggio Amelia, near Milan, in the northern part of Italy, he assumed the rabbonus of the city. </p><p>Over his life, he was not only famed for his Torah, but also for his compositions. These are printed in his sefer Korban Shira, published after his passing.</p><p>On the sixth of Elul, he was niftar in Reggio Amelia, and interred there. </p><p>Rav Shimshon Chaim is most famous today because of his seforim by the name of Zera Shimshon. </p><p>Rabbi Nachman Seltzer is the author of the Artscroll books on Zera Shimshon, and he spoke with us about the incredible way in which the seforim have been received in recent years. </p><p>“In all honesty, we never expected the seforim to take off to such an extent,” he said. </p><p>“There was always the factor of the segula, and I added stories along with the Torah because I wanted to do whatever I could to expose any many people as possible to the beauty of the Zera Shimshon's Torah. </p><p>“Then it came out and we were swept away with the incredible success as thousands of Yidden began learning from the seforim on a weekly, bi-weekly or daily basis. </p><p>“The segula is definitely a factor. Many people have experienced yeshuos after learning from the sefer, which everyone holds of - from Rav Chaim Kanievsky z'l down. But the Torah itself is just incredible. It spans from Gemara to Chumash to Midrash and everything in between. The Zera Shimshon draws exquisite tapestries of Torah thoughts - real edifices of chidushim. It's the real thing, and Yidden respond to real Torah,” Rabbi Seltzer said. </p><p>The Zera Shimshon gave incredible assurances to those who will learn his Torah. </p><p>But, Rabbi Seltzer explains: “They come for the segula and they stay for the Torah.” </p><div><br></div>1108/17/23, 6:03 PM230817070541-54356038411203Living Legacy: Rav Yonasan Steif, zt”lliving-legacy-rav-yonasan-steif-zt-l<p>The 9th of Elul marks the yohrtzeit of the great dayan and posek, Rav Yonasan Steif, who served as a pillar of halachah and as a guiding light <br></p><p><b>‘Der Kleiner Madmid’ </b></p><p>Rav Yonasan was born in the hamlet of Kolta, in the Nitra region of Slovakia. His father, Reb Tzvi, was a talmid and musmach of the Ksav Sofer, and from an early age, young Yonasan’s future greatness in Torah was apparent. The young Yonasan stood out in the town for his superhuman hasmodoh, even as a young boy. His parents recognized this, and sent him to the famed Pressburger yeshiva, his father’s alma matter, as a boy of eleven years old. The yeshiva was then under the leadership of the Shevet Sofer, Rav Simcha Bunim Sofer, who would become Rav Yonansan’s rebbi muvhok. </p><p>In Pressburg, he earned the moniker der kleiner masmid, on account of his small stature which stood in contrast to his towering spiritual figure. His rebbi, the Shevet Sofer, showered him with adoration and reverence, taking a keen interest in his development, and guiding and mentoring him every step of the way. Even being a young bachur, his rebbi encouraged him to deliver a shiur in Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim before bachurim who were older than he. He also received guidance and love from Rav Dovid Lakenbach, the dayan of Pressburg, who had yet lived in the times of the Chasam Sofer. </p><p>He also began to correspond with the gedolim of the time, including Rav Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld of Yerushalayim and Rav Shmuel Weinberger, the rov of Serdaheli who exclaimed that the Torah sharpness and erudition of this young ga’on are only outshone by the kedusha and taharah that emanate from his letters. </p><p>In 1922, Rav Yonasan was called to serve as a dayan in the great Hungarian city of Budapest, working under the great Av Beis Din, Rav Koppel Reich. In this capacity, he became one of the greatest authority figures in the Jewish community of Hungary. Despite his many communal obligations, he kept on learning with unrelenting hasmodoh. He also began to commit his many chiddushim to writing during these years. With the passing of the Chief Rabbi of Budapest, Rav Yonasan remained at the help of the spiritual leadership of the city. His fame and stature would only have continued to grow if not for the terrible Churban that began to loom over Hungarian Jewry. </p><p><b>At the Helm of the Viener Kehillah </b></p><p>Khal Adas Yerei’im-Vien in Williamsburg was founded in the year 1941 by a group of refugees at 616 Bedford Aveune, sharing quarters with the legendary Zeirei Agudath Israel. But they were actually a continuation of the Schiffschul in Vienna, which had a very rich history, and clung valiantly to their traditions of Oberlander Jewry. </p><p>With the arrival of the great ga’on and tzaddik, they immediately asked him to lead them, and what began with a small kehillah of a few balebatim would soon become a prominent community of hundreds, which has only continued to grow in the ensuing years. </p><p>He began by saying shiurim, and steadily began to grow his influence both in his kehillah, as well as beyond its environs. Like his work in prewar Hungary, he involved himself in communal work, especially in the kashrus of mikva’os (to this day, the mikva in Fleischmann’s is known as “Rav Yonasan’s Mikva.” Under his guidance, the Viener kehillah grew into one of the finest and largest in Williamsburg, later spreading out to Boro Park and Monsey. </p><p>In Williamsburg, he became a legend. The gedolim referred the most difficult questions to him, and with the growth of his stature, he only seemed to grow humbler. He would walk in the street unaccompanied, blending into the crowds. But those who knew, knew. </p><p><b>Parting with His Most Precious Belongings</b></p><p>As Elul of the year 1958 approached, Rav Yonasan, a yid of 81 years old who had been through so much and had accomplished so much, continued apace with his avodas hakodesh, a beacon of light to all those around him. </p><p>On Shabbos mevorchim Elul, he spoke about the need for every Yid to feel the responsibility to bring the geulah, but later felt unwell. On his way out to the hospital, he tearfully parted with his seforim, kissing each one with great love. On the morning of the ninth of Elul, he recited tachnun, with tears, hitting his chest with his fist… as though he was filled with sin, chas v’sholom. </p><p>Hours later, his pure neshomoh ascended to the World of Truth, leaving behind a brilliant legacy of Torah writings and avodas haklal, and rare Torah leadership in old Williamsburg. </p>1101108/24/23, 4:32 PM12/20/23, 3:38 PM230823031201-755828741111071Living Legacy: Rav Yaakov Meshulam Orenstein, Author of Yeshu’os Yaakovliving-legacy-rav-yaakov-meshulam-orenstein-author-of-yeshu-os-yaakov<p>Yehuda Alter <br></p><p>Shabbos, the 25th of Av, marks the yahrtzeit of the Yeshu’os Yaakov, a great ga’on who was the rov of Lvov. </p><p>Rav Yaakov Meshulam was born to his father, Rav Mordechai Zev Orenstein, the rov of Lvov in the year 1775 (1770, according to some accounts). At that time, Rav Mordechai Zev was the rov in Yampil, Ukraine. They hailed from great ga’onim including Rav Tzvi Ashkenazi, known as the Chacham Tzvi, the Bach, the Tosafos Yom Tov. The Orenstein family is one of the most illustrious and famed families in all of European Jewry, with many rabbonim among them serving in Poland. In Lvov alone, the Rabbonim from the Orenstein family served for one hundred and fifty years. </p><p>In his youth, he learned under his father, and was widely renowned as a great iluy who was familiar in all areas of Torah, with tremendous sharpness and erudition. </p><p>Tragically, his father was niftar when he was a young boy, and his mother was nifteres even before that, leaving him a yasom from his father and mother at a very young age. </p><p>He married the daughter of the famed philanthropist Reb Tzvi, the son of Rav Naftoli Hirtz of Yaroslav, and the couple settled there. </p><p>In Yaroslav (Jarosław is about 35 kilometers from Lizensk, in Galicia), Rav Yaakov Meshulam found camaraderie with the ga’onim of the region who loved coming to speak with him in learning. His reputation spread, and when his uncle left the rabbonus of Yaroslav, he was naturally thought of as a replacement. However, when his aunt heard that her young nephew would be replacing her illustrious husband, she became very upset. Seeing this, Rav Yaakov Meshulam refused to take the position, and he moved to another city where he became the Rov. </p><p>Soon, he was called to assume the place of his father as the rov of Lvov. </p><p>In Lvov, the big city, Rav Yaakov Meshulam began to suffer terrible persecution from the maskilim—and for his part, he did not hold back in battling them. Together with Rav Akiva Eiger and the Chasam Sofer, they held great battles against the maskilim in whom they saw a great threat to Torah and Yiddishkeit. Together with this, he emerged as one of the great leaders of his time, and was seen as the chief Rov of Poland. </p><p>In the 1830’s, he published his Sefer Yeshuos Yaakov on the four sections of shulchan aruch. These seforim were widely accepted by the lomdim and leaders of his time. </p><p>He endured many travails in his life, but the one source of light for him was his one and only son, Mordechai Zev, who was a great ga’on. He sadly preceded his father in passing by two years. </p><p>The Yeshuos Yaakov was niftar on the 25th of Av in 1839 and was laid to rest in Lvov. The cemetery was razed subsequently, and all that remains is a monument commemorating the burial of Rav Yaakov Meshulam and other great tzaddikim who were interred there. </p>1101108/10/23, 4:58
