Maimonides Creates Freestanding ER on the Former Site of Victory Memorial Hospital
Maimonides Medical Center, which has bought the site of the former Victory Memorial Hospital on 92nd Street and Seventh Avenue, broke ground on Friday to create a freestanding, 15,000 square-foot emergency department that should be completed by early 2022.

Up until now, south Brooklynites who needed urgent care had to make their ways to Sunset Park or Coney Island.

“If your dad falls off a ladder, if your daughter breaks a bone, if you’re in a car accident, if you’re experiencing chest pain: an emergency department that’s in your neighborhood can mean the difference between life or death,” said Josephine Imperatrice of Maimonides, who added that the Bay Ridge area did not previously have easy access to emergency rooms.

In addition, the space that used to house the former maternity hospital that closed in 2006 will not only treat patients’ emergencies, but it will save lives because its convenient location will dramatically shorten the time it takes EMTs to transport patients who are critically ill.

“So instead of taking eight minutes, we can shorten it to four minutes and they can see a physician right away,” said Shmuel Gager, who is an emergency worker.

“With something like cardiac arrest: you want to be met on time,” said Maimonides CEO and President Kenneth Gibbs. “We were number one in the country for outcomes. We’re bringing that to these communities.”
