Major Cyberattack Targets U.S. Marshals Service
by Mindy Cohn
Law enforcement officials reported on Monday that the U.S. Marshals Service experienced a security breach.
The system was disconnected from the network as soon as the breach was discovered. Since then, the agency has created a workaround that allows it to continue its operations and efforts to locate fugitives.
According to the report, the security breach took place more than a week ago. It affected sensitive information, including returns from legal processes, administrative data, and personally identifiable information of subjects of USMS investigations, third parties, and certain USMS employee sensitive information. The breach did not involve the witness protection program.
The Justice Department's forensic investigation is ongoing at this time.
