Mayor Mamdani and DOT Announce Major Pothole Blitz Following Harsh Winter

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn announced a citywide pothole repair blitz following a winter marked by heavy snowfall and extended cold temperatures.

Beginning at 6 a.m. on Shabbos, more than 80 NYC DOT crews were deployed across streets and highways in all five boroughs to repair road damage caused by winter weather. City officials said crews worked throughout the day to fill thousands of potholes, with additional repair blitzes planned in the coming weeks.

According to the Department of Transportation, more than 50,000 potholes have been repaired across the city since January 1. More than 10,000 of those repairs were completed during the past week alone as crews increased repair efforts.

The blitz comes as the city begins its annual road resurfacing season. NYC DOT plans to resurface about 1,150 lane miles of roadway this year through curb-to-curb repaving projects across the five boroughs.

Officials say potholes commonly form in early spring when winter moisture and repeated freezing and melting weaken road surfaces.

Drivers were advised to expect possible travel delays during the work, and residents are encouraged to report potholes to 311 so crews can address road defects quickly.
