Mayor Mamdani Announces Over 50 Changes to Make It Easier to Run a Small Business in NYC
By Y.M. Lowy
If you own a business in New York City, some changes could soon make life a little easier.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that the city is rolling out more than 50 reforms to cut red tape, reduce unnecessary fees, and make it simpler for small businesses to open and operate.
Among the changes, New York City will eliminate certain unnecessary local permit requirements, including the city’s additional permit to sell frozen treats like ice cream. Other reforms are expected to make the licensing and permitting process easier across a wide range of industries.
The mayor also signed an executive order creating a new city initiative called OPEN, which will oversee these changes, while expanding NYC BEST, a program that helps business owners deal with permits, inspections, violations, and other city requirements.
Another new addition is a Business Owner Bill of Rights, designed to make sure business owners know what help is available and what rights they have when dealing with city agencies.
Whether you own a restaurant, grocery, daycare, or another small business, these changes are meant to make opening, operating, and growing a business less complicated.
