Memorial Day Closures and Schedule Changes Across New York City

Y. Rose

New York City residents should be aware of several closures and modified schedules in effect this Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, impacting sanitation services, public transportation, government offices, banks, and mail delivery throughout the city.

The New York City Department of Sanitation said there is no trash, recycling, or curbside compost collection taking place on Memorial Day. Residents who normally receive Monday collection are advised to place their material curbside Monday evening for pickup beginning Tuesday, though delays may occur following the holiday.

Many city offices are also closed for the day, including public schools, Department of Education offices, DMV locations, courts, public libraries, and other non-emergency government offices. Alternate Side Parking regulations are suspended citywide in observance of Memorial Day.

The United States Postal Service has suspended regular mail delivery for the federal holiday, and post offices remain closed Monday. Residents should expect a one-day delay for mail delivery and services.

Public transportation continues operating throughout the holiday, though several systems are running on modified schedules. NYC Ferry is operating on a weekend schedule for Memorial Day, while the Staten Island Ferry is following its holiday timetable.

The MTA is also operating holiday or weekend-level service on parts of the transit system, including the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad. Riders are encouraged to check the MTA website or app for updated schedules and possible service changes before traveling.
