National Grid Scraps Plan to Build Vaporizers in Brooklyn

by YS Gold

National Grid has withdrawn its application to build two massive boilers for natural gas, known as vaporizers, in the Greenpoint area of Brooklyn. This after state regulation authorities determined that it was unnecessary in order to meet demand—despite Natural Grid’s insistence that it would need this infrastructure in the case of extreme weather

In a letter to the state Department of Environmental Conservation, the utility company wrote, “Although National Grid disagrees with the analysis conducted by PA Consulting Group, Inc. regarding the required in-service date for the Vaporizer 13/14 Project at the Greenpoint Energy Center The Brooklyn Union Gas Company / National Grid NY is withdrawing the above-referenced permit application at this time.”

The development was met with satisfaction by lawmakers and residents of the Greenpoint area who have been concerned over the health ramifications of an expansion of natural gas infrastructure in the area.
