New Dock to Shift Deliveries from Trucks to Boats
By Y.M. Lowy
As previously reported on BoroPark24, the NYC Department of Transportation is opening a new boat dock. Instead of using trucks to move food, they will start using the city’s waterways.
This is estimated to keep about 1,000 trucks a month off the roads in the Bronx. Close to 90% of goods being delivered in NYC are delivered by truck. The Department is placing special focus on the “last mile,” meaning the last mile that goods have to travel before they reach their final destination.
The City hopes to develop what it is calling a “Blue Highway” and to utilize the City’s abundant waterways as a faster, more efficient, and environmentally friendly way for New Yorkers to receive their deliveries.
First, they will use a big temporary dock with a huge crane. Later, they plan to build bigger docks for food and building materials. They also want to fix up other places around the city where boats can stop and drop off food.
But making all this happen will take a long time. Right now, almost all the stuff that comes into the city is still travelling by truck.
