New Look at Proposed IBX Stations Coming to Boro Park
By Y.M. Lowy
New renderings released this week are giving Boro Park residents a first look at what a future Interborough Express station could look like.
The proposed IBX light-rail line would connect Brooklyn and Queens along an existing rail corridor. In Boro Park, one of the planned stations is on New Utrecht Avenue, with a proposed entrance near 61st Street and 14th Avenue.
The station would connect with the D and N trains at 62nd Street/New Utrecht Avenue. The MTA’s plans show a modern station with multiple elevators, wider fare gates, improved lighting, digital signs and updated audio announcements. The elevators would also have wider cabs for better accessibility.
Another IBX station is planned on McDonald Avenue, serving Boro Park, Kensington and Midwood. That station would connect with the F train at Avenue I and 18th Avenue, with a proposed entrance near McDonald Avenue and Elmwood Avenue.
The full IBX line is planned to have 18 stations stretching from the Brooklyn Army Terminal to Queens. The entire trip would take about 32 minutes, with connections to 17 subway lines, more than 50 bus routes and the LIRR.
The project is still in the design and environmental-review stages, so construction is not starting yet. The MTA is continuing the environmental review before the project can move forward.
