New Platform Barriers Installed at 50 Subway Stations

By Y.M. Lowy

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the MTA has completed installing protective platform edge barriers at 50 subway stations across New York City. Those include Clark Street, Morgan Avenue, Grand Street, Dekalb Avenue, Halsey Street, Bushwick Avenue–Aberdeen Street, Myrtle–Wyckoff Avenues, and others.

The barriers are part of a larger safety push by the MTA to help prevent people from falling or being pushed onto the tracks. These clear barriers are placed at the edges of platforms and are meant to give riders extra protection while waiting for their train.

In Brooklyn alone, other stations that got the new barriers include Graham Avenue, Jefferson Street, Bedford Avenue, Lorimer Street, Wilson Avenue, Montrose Avenue, Eastern Parkway–Brooklyn Museum, Grand Army Plaza, President Street, Hoyt Street, Beverly Road, Sterling Street, Winthrop Street, and Bergen Street.

The MTA says this is just the beginning. They plan to install barriers at more than 100 subway stations by the end of 2025.
