New Public School Opens in Boro Park

By Idy Perl

This morning, an official Naming Ceremony took place at the new public elementary school that is located on 63rd Street and 13th Avenue.

At the official ceremony, the school was named The Detective Wenjian Liu School of Civics and Entrepreneurship, after a police detective who was killed in the line of duty in 2014. This is the first school in Brooklyn to be named for an Asian-American.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams, NYPD Commissioner Edward A. Caban, Local politicians, NYC Public School leaders, and the family of the police detective were in attendance at the ceremony.

Mayor Adams referred to Detective Wenjian Liu as 'my friend,' recalling the moment he heard of the assassination of the detective and his partner Detective Ramos., who was also killed in the same incident. 'The families turned their pain into a purpose,' he remarked.

The school is set to open this fall for the upcoming school year.
