New York City Marathoners Race through all Five Boroughs, Sunday Morning

COVID cancelled last year’s New York City Marathon, but the race is back on this Sunday, Nov. 7.

Before last year, the last time the New York marathon was canceled was in 2012: right after Hurricane Sandy.

To prepare for tens of thousands of runners to race across the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge tomorrow morning, its upper level has already been closed tonight in both directions. Tomorrow, the bridge will be closed, in both directions, to all traffic from 7 am to 4 pm.

Although 53,000 marathoners ran the 26.2 mile-course through all five boroughs in 2019, this year, only 30,000 runners, who all had to provide proof of at least one dose of a vaccination or a negative COVID test, will race through the streets.

The marathon begins with its first wave of participants at 8am in Staten Island when the participants in the professional wheelchair division take off.

At 8:22am, a wave of other athletes with disabilities will hit their marks, and at 8:40am, and then 9:05am, professional female and male runners will get set to go.

At 9:10am, the first of five different waves of regular New York City runners will begin to make their ways through Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx before ending up in Central Park in Manhattan, where the majority of runners are expected to finish in waves: starting at 11:55am.
