New York Dmv Offices To Close For Nearly A Week In February

By Yisroel R.

New York State DMV offices will temporarily close for nearly a week in mid-February as the department moves forward with a major system upgrade, state officials announced.

According to the DMV, all offices will close starting at 2 p.m. on February 13 and will remain closed through February 18. During that time, online and phone services will also be unavailable, meaning customers will not be able to complete transactions either in person or remotely.

Officials said the temporary shutdown is needed to allow the DMV to transition to a new, consolidated computer system and to properly test it before offices reopen. DMV Commissioner and Chair of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee Mark J.F. Schroeder said the upgrade will replace hundreds of older software programs, some of which date back decades.

“With one consolidated, state-of-the-art system, we will be replacing hundreds of software applications,” Schroeder said, adding that the changes are expected to help DMV staff serve New Yorkers faster and more efficiently. State officials noted that the next major technology upgrade is currently planned for 2028.

Residents who need DMV services are encouraged to plan ahead and complete any urgent business before the February closure.
