Night 3 of Chanukah Family Fun: Hold a Contest for the Most Beautifully Decorated Dessert

Night 3 of Chanukah Family Fun: Hold a Contest for the Most Beautifully Decorated Dessert

By Yehudit Garmaise

Every Chanukah party must provide sweet treats, so why not let children have fun making them or decorating them by themselves?

While donuts in bakeries are fried, bakers can make them at home by following a simple recipe, buying donut molds, and just popping them in the oven.

Also available on 13th Avenue are silicone baking molds to make muffins and cupcakes in the shape of dreidels!

The following are instructions for a Chanukah dessert decorating contest:

  1. Buy or bake enough plain donuts or sugar cookies so everyone can decorate one or two.
  2. If you are making the sugar cookies yourself, you can buy Chanukah-themed cookie cutters to make cookies in the shapes of menorahs, Maccabee shields, and dreidels.
  3. Pick up a few small prizes for the winner and the runner-up.
  4. Assign two judges, perhaps teens who are not enthusiastic about baking or decorating desserts.
  5. Buy a variety of frostings, icings, sprinkles, and Chanukah-themed edible toppings and small candy that participants can use to decorate.
  6. Play Chanukah music for 10 minutes while everyone designs and decorates their desserts to their hearts’ content.
  7. Place each creation on a paper plate without names on them.
  8. The judges should together choose a winner and a runner-up, who both win small prizes.
