NY Lawmakers Propose Adding $1 Billion to Rental Assistance Program for Tenants and Landlords

By Yehudit Garmaise

New York Assembly and Senate members are proposing to add at least $1 billion to the Emergency Rental Assistance Program, as legislators negotiate with Gov. Hochul to finalize the state’s budget by the April 1 deadline.

A year ago, the federal government originally provided New York with $2.4 billion to help landlords and tenants who were struggling with rental arrears amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but those funds are now emptied.

After New York's eviction moratorium expired in January, New Yorkers who applied for rental assistance remained protected from eviction as long as they were in the process of applying for rent relief.

Housing advocates who are calling for more rental relief, however, say such protections won't last forever.

Lawmakers, who have been pushing to boost funding for housing, utilities, and home care, continue to negotiate with Gov. Hochul, whose proposed budget currently includes $2 billion in funding for extra COVID-19 relief.
