NY State Police Crack Down on Unsafe Drivers, by Issuing 10,238 Tickets During the July 4th Weekend

Gov.  Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Police announced today that they issued 10,238 tickets statewide during the July 4th weekend campaign to enforce safety.

While the summer months, unfortunately, have a higher prevalence of trauma, car accidents and bike accidents, than the rest of the year, said Yehuda Kasirer, the director of the Lev Rochel Bikor Cholim of Lakewood, NJ., holiday weekends can be particularly dangerous on the roads.

"Putting others in danger by driving impaired is unacceptable in the State of New York, and those who do it will be held accountable," Gov. Cuomo said. "Thank you to the women and men of law enforcement around the state who patrol our streets to keep us safe.

“Lives were saved this holiday weekend because of your hard work and dedication to the people you serve."

During the safety campaign, which ran over the long weekend that took place from Friday, July 2 to Monday, July 5, state police manned sobriety checkpoints, targeted reckless and aggressive driving, and ticketed distracted drivers who used handheld electronic devices.

The Governor's Traffic Safety Committee partially funded the extra law enforcement that resulted in the arrests of 195 drivers under the influence and investigated 648 crashes, which included 122 personal injuries and two deaths.

Troopers statewide also targeted speeding and aggressive drivers, who often cause accidents.
