NYC Adds $2 Million in Budget Revenue… by Reinstating Twice-A-Week Alternate Side Parking

When the NYC Department of Sanitation announced that it is reinstating twice-a-week alternate side parking, after a year’s long hiatus due to Covid, the reasoning was that the streets need to be cleaned again.

“It went on for far too long and it largely sidelined the best cleanup tool in our arsenal, which is the mechanical broom,” Jessica Tisch, the city’s new sanitation commissioner, said in an interview after announcing the reinstatement. “And I think that has made a meaningful difference in the cleanliness of every neighborhood in this city.”

But the old rules, stated to go back into effect on July 5th, will also bring in additional revenue for NYC, a whopping $2 million, just from fines for people failing to move their vehicles.

The number was tweeted out by Katie Honan, a reporter with The City. “Per the budget release, restoring twice-per-week ASP will bring in an additional $2 million in the next fiscal year.” When asked if the number is from fines, the reporter responded in the affirmative.

The question remains if reinstating the old rules is just another money grab by NYC, or does the city really want cleaner streets?
