NYC Antisemitic Hate Crimes More Than Double From a Year Ago

According to the latest monthly release by the NYPD of its Citywide Crime Statistics, antisemitic hate crimes for November in New York City more than doubled last month, increasing 125%  from what they were a year ago.

Antisemitic hate crimes have been steadily increasing in  New York City throughout the year. The five boroughs had 45 antisemitic crimes in November. This included the arrest in Penn Station of two terrorists with plans to shoot up a synagogue which they boasted about on social media. According to newly released NYPD statistics, there were only twenty such crimes in November 2021.

This is in direct contrast to citywide crimes in general, which decreased in November 2022 by 1.2% compared with November 2021. The overall decrease allowed Police Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell to feel comfortable sharing the following quote, which made no mention of antisemitic crimes.

“Every day, the NYPD’s singular focus is the safety and well-being of every resident, commuter, and visitor in our great city,” said the police commissioner. “As we near the end of this year, our department is seeing substantial, tangible progress toward our public safety goals – and that is because of the dedicated work of our exceptional officers and civilian members... Their work has yielded positive results, with major crime down in the month of November 2022 compared to the same period last year.”
