NYC Census Tools Get an Upgrade

NYC Census Tools Get an Upgrade

C.G. Hoffman

The Department of City Planning (DCP) has introduced some new updates to its online census data tools. Population FactFinder and Population MapViewer tools now feature new demographic information that provide more information about New York’s diverse neighborhoods.

“The latest additions to Population FactFinder and MapViewer are the next step in our ongoing work to make important demographic information about New York City accessible and transparent to all,” says Dan Garodnick, Director of the Department of City Planning. “Our cutting-edge online tools make it easy to visualize complicated demographic data across New York’s diverse neighborhoods and communities.”

The new information available will include detailed age, household composition, home ownership vs. rentals, and vacancy rates. This will be viewable by block, neighborhood, Community Districts and the latest City Council Districts. Viewers will easily be able to view clear charts with their selected search criteria highlighted by area. It will now be significantly easier to view changes to neighborhoods over time, and to compare neighborhoods, an important tool when deciding on a new home.

The DCP introduced the new upgrades as part of its plans for community growth in the City, in preparation of the City’s 10 year Capital Strategy. It is part of a larger overhaul which includes promoting housing infrastructure and services, affordable housing and economic development across the five boroughs.
