An advisory was issued today by the New York Emergency Management Department regarding potential snow showers and gusty winds that may reduce visibility create hazardous driving conditions until Wednesday evening.  Snow squalls might be in the forecast as well.
A snow squall is a sudden, intense period of moderate to heavy billowing snow for a duration of 30 minutes to an hour.  Squalls produce heavy wind gusts ant may cause brief whiteout conditions, limiting visibility and causing travel conditions to become dangerous.
National Weather Service has also issued a wind advisory for NYC from 12 p.m. today until midnight with winds running 15 to 25 mph and gusts running to 50 mph.
The residents of New York should be cognizant of the dangerous travel conditions and are urged to be cautious and consider public transportation.  If you are traveling through a snow squall, be sure to turn on your headlights, drive slowly, and exercise caution.  The best option would be to avoid or delay travel until the squall passes.
