NYC Parks Display Artwork Featuring Writings from Shelter Residents

By Y.M. Lowy

A new public art installation called Public Address is now on display in parks across New York City. The project, presented through the NYC DOT Art program in collaboration with the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) and the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA), features street signs printed with handwritten messages and drawings from residents and staff in city shelters.

More than 300 participants took part in the project, contributing short log-style entries reflecting their thoughts and experiences. These pieces were printed onto aluminum street signs by the NYC DOT Sign Shop and installed on DOT street posts in several city parks.

So if you notice one of these unique signs while walking through a city park, you’ll know it’s part of “Public Address” - a heartfelt project sharing voices and messages from New York City shelter residents.
