NYPD Disciplines Unvaccinated Cops who are Not Wearing Masks at All Times

By Yehudit Garmaise

The NYPD, of which only 43% of its uniformed and civilian employees is reported to be vaccinated, is now disciplining unvaccinated police officers who refuse to wear masks on the job, as per an executive order written by Mayor Bill de Blasio.

The mayor’s executive order, which went into effect on Monday, Aug. 16, and the discipline will be “on a case-by-case basis,” an NYPD sergeant told BoroPark24. “At this time there is no specific penalty.”

While all police officers: vaccinated or not, are required to wear masks when they are in elevators, in schools, on public transit, in homeless shelters, in jails, in nursing homes, and in hospitals, now all unvaccinated NYPD employees who are working are now required to wear face coverings all the time, both indoors and outdoors, reads an NYPD bulletin sent out the entire police force last night.

“Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken for unvaccinated members found not wearing face coverings when required,” said the memo, which did not specify the nature of the disciplinary action.

The masking requirement comes four weeks before Sept. 13, when all city workers will be given the choice to get vaccinated or to submit to weekly COVID tests.

The mayor has many times emphasized the importance of vaccination over masks, which provide inferior protection against the ever-mutating coronavirus, now that vaccinations, which have shown to be highly effective in preventing infection, hospitalization, and death, have been made widely available.

The police department, which has struggled to persuade the majority of its officers to get their shots, instructed officers to provide proof of their vaccinations with the NYPD’s Medical Division, or they will they be required to mask at all times: whether indoors, outdoors, or while riding in patrol cars.

Sergeants, directors, and other high-ranking officers will be enforcing the masking policy for unvaccinated officers.

“[NYPD] members may temporarily remove their masks when engaging in reasonable activities such as consuming food, drinking beverages, adjusting the face coverings due to temperature or to correct a breathing condition, according to the NYPD bulletin.

One police source, who was pleased with the masking requirement, said that it was a good thing “for the sake of humanity,” the Post reported.
