Last December, a massive blaze nearly burned an entire NYPD Brooklyn warehouse to the ground. Most of the evidence from hundreds, if not thousands of crimes scenes throughout the city, was destroyed in the blaze and its aftermath. The fire at Erie Basin Auto Point in the Red Hook neighborhood destroyed evidence gathered over decades.
On Tuesday, NYC politicians blasted the NYPD for their negligence in this episode which will have untold effects on crimes-solving and convictions of perpetrators of crimes.
"It is deeply concerning that the NYPD was not in a better position to track and compile a comprehensive inventory of evidence stored at the Erie Basin before the fire occurred,” said one councilmember at the session.
“The loss and damage of evidence not only hampers the pursuit of justice, but also raises doubts about the integrity of the criminal investigations and potential wrong convictions,” she said.
