Record-Breaking Dangerous Heat Expected Across Tri-State Area Later This Week

A dangerous stretch of heat and humidity is expected to move into the tri-state area later this week, with conditions possibly reaching record-breaking levels in some locations.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for the region beginning Wednesday, as temperatures are expected to climb sharply and continue into the early weekend.

By Thursday, 17 Tamuz fast day, many areas could see temperatures near or above 100 degrees. With humidity added in, it may feel more like 105 to 110 degrees in many locations.

Forecasters say some afternoon high-temperature records could be broken as winds shift and bring hotter air into the area. In Central Park, the record high for July 2 is 100 degrees, set in 1966, while the July 3 record is 103 degrees, also set in 1966.

The extreme heat is expected to raise the risk of heat-related illness, especially for those working outdoors or spending extended time outside.

Officials are urging residents to stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible, drink plenty of water, and check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and others who may be more vulnerable during the heat.
