Senior Scammed of Thousands of Dollars

Scammers succeeded in stealing thousands of dollars from a local senior in a phone scam.
The eighty-year-old was bilked out of $16,000 in the increasingly common "Parents/Grandparents Bail Scam," where victims are told their child or grandchild needs cash for bail or lawyers' fees.
According to Boro Park Shomrim, who spoke with BoroPark24 about the latest case of Grandparents Bail Scam, the Ukrainian immigrant was told last week that her nephew had been arrested after a car accident involving an expectant woman. She was then informed that her grandson needed an $8,000 retainer to cover a lawyer.
After the scam artist arrived to pick up the cash, the victim received a second phone call the following day. The caller explained that another $8,000 was needed for the lawyer to continue representing the nephew.
After she paid out the man who arrived for the second time, the woman finally thought to check with her family, who called 911 regarding the false story.
As reported on Hamodia, who broke this story, the victim then reached out on her own to the scam artist as per instructions from Detective Vlad Machulsky of the NYPD's 66th Precinct under the pretense of asking for her nephew's new phone number. She was told that another $8,000 would be necessary to continue the case.
This time, though, when Kevin Green, the same man who had come before but supposedly not the scammer on the phone, came to pick up the cash, he was arrested by plainclothes officers.
When he was taken into custody, the thirty-three-year-old Staten Island resident had a large amount of cash on his person in addition to the $8,000 he had just been given. He was charged with grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, petit larceny, and criminal impersonation for each of the three occasions he came to pick up cash.
