Several Entrances Close at Exxon Gas Station on Fort Hamilton for Pedestrian Safety

By Y.M. Lowy

Drivers in the area may notice things look different near the Exxon gas station (Zoom) on Fort Hamilton. The DOT has started closing several of the station’s entrances and exits, a move they say is meant to protect pedestrians who cross these corners every day.

Cars come in from different directions, buses pass through, and many people walk on the sidewalk nearby. According to the DOT, the gas station’s original layout had too many ways for cars to pull in and out, which created confusion and risky crossings. The new plan trims down those access points so traffic moves in a more controlled way.

Here’s what’s changing.

The entrance right on the 43rd Street corner is now closed, with safety posts blocking cars from turning in. The next entrance along Fort Hamilton is still open for car entry. A third entrance has been shifted toward the center of the property, giving drivers a clearer, safer entry point. The entrance at the 44th Street corner is being fully shut as well.

On the New Utrecht Avenue side, the gas station had two exits. The exit closer to 44th Street is now being closed off, leaving only the 43rd Street side for cars to pull out.

The idea behind all of this is to make walking through the area less stressful while still keeping the gas station completely usable. Drivers may need a little time to adjust to the new setup, so everyone passing by is encouraged to go slow and watch for the updated signs and barriers.

These changes are currently underway, and additional adjustments may be made as the DOT completes the work.
