Speed Cameras Coming to MTA Bridges and Tunnels

By Y.M. Lowy
Speeding through work zones on MTA bridges and tunnels may soon lead to an automatic ticket in the mail. Governor Kathy Hochul agreed to expand a speed camera program to include MTA crossings like the Verrazzano Bridge, the RFK Bridge, and the Queens-Midtown Tunnel.
The cameras will be used to catch drivers going over the speed limit in work zones. A first offense will cost $50, a second offense within 18 months will cost $75, and any subsequent violations will cost $100 each. The program, which was first tested on state highways, will now be extended through 2031.
The MTA must hold a public hearing and a board vote before starting the program.
