Speed Cameras Go Live 24/7, 365 Days a Year: Starting Monday

New York City’s 2,000 speed cameras will be operating 24/7, including holidays, starting Monday, Aug. 1.

The city is not revealing the exact locations of the cameras, however, under NY law, the cameras only can be installed within a quarter-mile of school buildings.

The cameras were originally intended to protect schoolchildren as they came and left from school, however the Department of Transportation (DOT) soon saw the speed cameras slowed people down and saved lives.

“Speeding drops 72% in camera-zone locations,” said DOT Commissioner Ydanis about the cameras that previously only ran 10am to 6pm. “Just because today is Sunday doesn’t mean that New Yorkers can drive recklessly. Just because it is 2am, and the roads are empty that does not mean that the speed limit does not apply.”

Violators of city speed limits will receive $50 tickets in the mail.

In 2021, pedestrian deaths in NYC reached 40-year high, as result of speeding, reckless, and distracted drivers.

“Traffic safety is public safety,” NYPD Deputy Chief Michael Pilecki said. “Speed cameras are a key component in our mission to end traffic fatalities.”

One thousand new raised crosswalks throughout the city are another measure the DOT will take to better protect NYC pedestrians, Rodriguez told BoroPark24 last week at the Boro Park Hatzolah Garage, where the DOT commissioner met with local officials to collaborate in designating parking spaces throughout Boro Park for Hatzolah volunteers who are attending to patients in medical emergencies.

“Mayor Adams allocated close to $1 billion for the DOT to have all the resources that we need to resurface streets and to make our streets safer,” Rodriguez said.

"Are any raised crosswalks coming to Boro Park?" BoroPark24 asked the DOT commissioner.

“In any location that the council members and the leaders in the community feel that we need to bring those resources, we would do it,” Commissioner Rodriguez responded.
